US Designers Selected by WantedDesign for Design Week Mexico’s Inédito Digital

For the first time, Design Week Mexico invited two international curators and collaborators, Odile Hainaut and Claire Pijoulat, co-founders of WantedDesign, to present a selection of American designers to take part in Inédito Digital.

A regular part of Design Week Mexico’s annual programming, Inédito is an open call for utilitarian design projects in the categories of: social impact, environmental impact, innovation, function, aesthetics, concept, user experience, materials and processes. The platform includes three categories of participation: professional, student and, for the first time in 2020, digital.

The six US designers selected for Inédito Digital, drawn from WantedDesign’s program of events and exhibitions, are:

  • Nina Cho
  • Cody James Norman
  • Laylo Studio
  • Sam Friedlander
  • Sunny Kim
  • Theo Ferrin

We are thrilled that Design Week Mexico has chosen the United States to be the Guest Country for the 2020-2021 edition. It’s a great honor to have been invited as a guest curator.

Since we met in 2014 with Emilio Cabrero, Andrea Cesarman, Marco Coelo, co-founders of DWM, we have been passionate about Mexican design and creativity. We are mutually committed to building this bridge, and friendship, between Mexican and American design communities, developing collaborations, and encouraging creative exchanges between our countries.

The Inédito program is one of the most exciting parts of Mexico Design Week, putting a spotlight on the young Mexican design scene; it’s the best platform to discover innovative and beautifully crafted design products.

Creating beautiful objects with original material and technics is deeply rooted in Mexican culture. Somehow, the revival of a “design, makers, entrepreneurs” movement in the US with studios founded by young designers all across the country has many similitudes with the way Mexican studios operate. They explore specific materials, typology of products, create small collections, and work mainly by commission and custom projects.

We looked at designers part of WantedDesign Launch Pad, Look Book, or American Design Honors, who have a strong design language and process to represent the US as part of Inédito. The six studios based in Brooklyn, Detroit, Nashville, or Chicago translate this notion of “modern craft”.

We hope it can find an echo in Mexico and create a rich conversation between the two countries.

The 2020-2021 edition of Design Week Mexico, in which the United States of America and the State of Oaxaca de Juárez participated as Country and State guests of honor, has elements that will extend until the summer of 2021.

The Inédito virtual exhibit will remain on the website until mid-2021.
