Furniture Design at Rhode Island School of Design is an expansive discipline, where students synthesize ideas about what furniture is, what it’s for, how it’s made, what it’s made of, and what potential it has for artists and designers. The department’s curriculum emphasizes hands-on work to foster skills with a variety of tools, techniques and technologies, and challenges students to develop ethical, sensitive, and knowledgeable use of materials. Useful objects are viewed as important expressions of culture, with the functional expectations one brings to an object understood as both an opportunity for innovation and a point to diverge from. Furniture Design students investigate some of the most important questions facing designers today—from how to take advantage of changing technologies and new materials, to how to respond to variable economic conditions and evolving lifestyles.
