The French-American Online Design Schools Workshop is a collaborative workshop in which teams was created with mixed groups of students. They all worked from home where they were confined.

French and American schools participating collaboratively and synchronously online over 3 days, in teams of three or four selected students (10 teams, for a total of 34 students). The goal is to open a dialog between the students from both sides of the Atlantic and with different backgrounds, and therefore the team will include students from different schools.

Design professors from ENSAD (France), PARSONS The New School (USA) and SVA (USA) will lead the workshop with students from their schools and Ecole ESTIENNE (France), ENSCI Les ateliers (France), ESAAT (France), ENSAAMA (France), Strate School of Design (France), PRATT Institute (USA), RISD (USA) and SAIC (USA).

The Jury Review was conducted by Allan Chochinov, and will include Sophie Larger, Laurent Clavel and Anne Claire Duprat (French Embassy), Odile Hainaut and Claire Pijoulat (WantedDesign), and guests from the design industry: Amelie du Passage (Petite Friture), matali crasset (designer), John Edelman (former CEO, Design Within Reach), Julie Lasky (editor, critic and writer).

The context

The urban response in NYC/Paris to the COVID-19 public health crisis.
How can design respond to the current worldwide public health challenge?
Students will work within the context of those cities at the time of the workshop, considering the evolution of the situation, the challenges at this specific time, and the time after.
The goal and hope are that the outcome and final online presentations will become a “Guide Book” (in website format) to be shared, and to have those proposals implemented to better respond to the ongoing situation or future similar situations.
